The Van Horn Tournament was a success even though we didn’t bring home the title. This year was a full tournament with 8 teams on both the girls and boys side. Our boys started out great and beat Sierra Blanca, but then ran into some trouble with Tornillo who eventually won the tournament. But the Eagles took third as they Defeated the Dell City Cougars by 20. Leading scorers for the tournament were Adam Ortega, Alex Baca, Jeremiah Turnbow and Rutesh Bahkta. Lead by Sr. Point Guard Adam Ortega the Eagles are finally getting things headed in the right direction. Coach Ortega is proud of his team’s effort and gives a lot of credit to his two big men Jeremiah Turnbow and Rutesh Bahkta for controlling the boards and paint throughout the tournament. The Eagles will travel to Sanderson for a tournament this weekend and then head to Iraan during the break for a holiday hoopla.

On the girls side the Lady Eagles were ready to play as they made quick work of Dell City and Presidio beating each of them by at least 20 points and placing themselves in the championship game. Aubry Durbin and Sara Serrano were a two headed monster as they provided the lady Eagles the scoring they needed. “Presidio had taken us down twice already this season so the girls where really amped up to play them again and show them that this is our house” said Coach Tucker. In the championship game the Lady Eagles lead most of the way, but came up a little short in the fourth quarter and lost by only one point in a very intense game. Lydia Patterson took home the first place trophy for the second year in a row, but knew that it wasn’t by much. Coach Tucker was very proud of his girl’s effort and said that we are continuing to get better and that is all that he ask for. The Lady Eagles will head to Sanderson as well this weekend and try to bring home the title. In the past two tournaments the Lady Eagles have won 3rd in the Marfa tournament and 2nd in the Van Horn Tournament so hopefully the third time is the charm.

Jenna Flores and Alex Baca were both named to the All-Tournament teams this year for the Van Horn invitational and Aubry Durbin was selected to the All Tournament team in the Marfa Lights Shootout.
